Judge Tunnell is the 56th judge to sit in Chester County since 1789, and was sworn into office on January 2, 2012.
Judge Tunnell is a graduate of Colgate University (B.A. 1972) and of the College of William and Mary (J.D. 1975). He was a board certified civil trial attorney and practiced law for 34 years in Chester County with the firms of Cremers, Morris, Greenwood & Tunnell (Phoenixville) and Gawthrop Greenwood, PC (West Chester).
Judge Tunnell is an alumnus of the National Judicial College, and an active member of the Pennsylvania Conference of State Trial Judges. He is a past president of the Chester County Bar Association (2003) and the Chester County Bar Foundation (2004). Judge Tunnell is a former co-editor of the Chester County Law Reporter (1976-2002). He is the past chair of the Pennsylvania Bar Association Civil Litigation Section (2004-2005) and the Pennsylvania Bar Association Professionalism Committee (2007-2009).
He hears civil cases, and sits in the Orphans’ Court Division.He is also the presiding judge of the Mental Health Court.
